The Walking Dead is a point and click game, told in episodes. It stays loyal to The Walking Dead canon while telling a new story (it even features some of the same characters as seen in the series and comic books). To keep the game faithful to the comics it uses cartoon style graphics.
Players are given options for dialog during the game – these different options can mean that the story is altered depending on your choice; you have a time limit to select every action to give the game a greater sense of urgency. You control the main character (unique to the game), Lee Everett, who, depending on your choices, is either amoral or simply misunderstood.
There are numerous action sequences throughout the game, where you have to rapidly respond – such as when you are being attacked by zombies. While the controls can be a little clunky, the storyline is very engrossing and gets the adrenaline going, the characters are well fleshed out with developed backstories, making you really care about everybody in your group. Due to your choices having an impact on the storyline, it makes it a great game to replay – you just need to choose different options to get a whole new story.
The climax to the game is great – you really care about what happens to Lee and Clementine, and it means you can’t wait to play the second instalment to see what happens. Overall, it is a great game and you don’t have to be a fan of The Walking Dead franchise to enjoy it.
